Rewards as Motivation for Achieving
Dryness
Giving your children rewards when they make
progress toward achieving dryness is a great motivational tool .
Rewards give them something to look forward to while they are getting
to dry.
Deciding How to Give Rewards
When deciding to give your child rewards for working towards and
achieving dryness, there are a few things it is important to keep in
mind:
-
Talk to you child to find out what is important
to them. A reward is only motivational if it means something to the
child.
-
Keep the reward in scale with the achievement –
for example, being dry for a night or getting up on their own with
the alarm might earn them 15 extra minutes of video game time. In
general it is better to avoid large rewards, such as a new bike for
staying dry for two months.
-
Set very clear rules about what earns rewards,
what does not and when the rewards will be given. If you promise a
new video game system simply for “not wetting the bed,” without
establishing milestones and timelines as well, then you risk an
argument from the child after one dry night that they deserve the
large reward.

Free Reward Certificates
At Try for Dry, we’ve found that many younger children respond well to
receiving an “award” when they have achieved dryness. The achievement
award shown here can be downloaded for free to provide your child with
a tangible reminder of his success.
